The best family photo locations around San Antonio and the Hill Country
Short answerFor warm, airy family photos near San Antonio, book the last 90 minutes before sunset at Canyon Lake, the Gruene riverbanks, Cibolo Nature Center in Boerne, or the Pearl and Mission San José in the city. Spring wildflowers along the 281 corridor and fall light at the lake are the two can't-miss seasons.

“Where should we take our family photos?” is the first question I get after “what should we wear.” Here's my honest short list, shaped by two things: good light and short walks for little legs.

Canyon Lake

My home turf. The overlooks and lakeside grass turn gold in the last hour before sunset, and there's room for kids to run without you worrying about traffic. Fall is spectacular. Best for: families, maternity, extended family.

Gruene and the Comal River, New Braunfels

Historic buildings, big cypress trees and water. Gruene gives you texture (brick, wood, string lights) and the river gives you that soft, dappled light. Go early on weekends before the tubing crowds. Best for: couples, seniors, families who like a little grit.

Boerne: Main Street and Cibolo Nature Center

Main Street has charm around every corner, and the Cibolo Nature Center trails have prairie grass, creek beds and shade. One location, two completely different looks. Best for: families with toddlers, seniors.

In San Antonio: the Pearl and the Missions

The Pearl is urban and polished: textures, arches, color. Mission San José is timeless stone and big skies. Both are easy to walk and both photograph beautifully in the first hour after sunrise when it's quiet. Best for: branding, couples, families who want a city feel.

Hill Country back roads: Bulverde, Spring Branch, Blanco

Wide open fields, old fences, oak trees, and in spring, bluebonnets along the 281 corridor. This is the “Texas” look. I keep a list of friendly landowners and public spots so we're never trespassing. Best for: everyone, especially big families.

A note on timing

I shoot most sessions in the last 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. For families with little ones who fade by 6 pm, morning light works just as well. Overcast days are a secret gift: soft light everywhere, no squinting.

Pick the place that feels like your family. The light I can handle.
